Agentic AI Coding Workflows

Overview

Practice of using AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot agents) connected to embedded toolchains and lab instruments through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Spans plan, implement, build, flash, and test cycles where the agent drives tools while the engineer reviews and steers.

Benefits

• AI handles routine boilerplate, build/flash/log inspection cycles
• Engineer attention focuses on design, review, and edge cases
• Enables natural-language-driven debugging sessions
• Accelerates onboarding for new team members

Limitations & Risks

• Quality depends heavily on tool availability via MCP and on prompt discipline
• Security boundaries around agent execution must be designed for lab hardware and IP
• Best practices for IP protection, audit trails, and review are still emerging

Recommended Actions

Pilot one agent + one MCP-exposed workflow (e.g., logic-analyzer capture or serial console) on a non-critical project, codify which tools agents may invoke, and capture session transcripts so the team can refine prompts and guardrails.

MCP itself is the enabling protocol — see also Tools quadrant. The interesting 2026 question is which embedded workflows benefit most from agent-driven execution vs. pure code suggestion.
