AI Coding Agents (Claude Code / Codex / Cursor)

Overview

Agent-based AI development environments (Claude Code, OpenAI Codex CLI, Cursor) that go well beyond code completion to drive multi-step development tasks — planning, file editing, build invocation, test running, PR creation. MCP-exposed tools extend the agent's reach into embedded lab workflows: logic analyzers, serial consoles, debug probes, and build systems.

Benefits

• Compresses the implementation phase of the SDLC dramatically
• Frees engineer attention for design, review, and edge cases
• MCP integration means agents can drive embedded toolchains directly, not just edit files
• Shortens the gap between requirement and shipping prototype

Limitations & Risks

• Requires team guardrails for IP protection, audit trails, and safe tool invocation in lab/production environments
• Quality varies by domain — large vendor SDKs need careful context management
• Best-practices for review and acceptance are still evolving

Recommended Actions

Standardize the team on one agent (Claude Code and Cursor are the current leaders for embedded), define which tools agents may invoke via MCP or local config, and capture session transcripts so the team can refine prompts and guardrails.
