Embedded Linux SoC Platforms

Overview

Cortex-A and x86-class System-on-Chip platforms running mainline or vendor-customized Linux. Covers gateways, infotainment, industrial HMIs, networking equipment, and high-end edge compute. Common families include NXP i.MX 8/9, TI Sitara, ST STM32MP, Rockchip RK35xx, Allwinner H/A series, and Intel Atom-class SoCs.

• Mature kernel and userspace ecosystem
• Full POSIX environment for complex applications
• Container and orchestration patterns (Docker, k3s, balena) translate cleanly to edge deployments
• Yocto/Buildroot/Ubuntu Core enable reproducible product builds

Limitations & Risks

• Real-time guarantees require PREEMPT_RT kernels and careful IRQ thread management
• Boot time and resource overhead are heavier than RTOS class
• Long-term security maintenance for the kernel and userspace is a real product cost

Recommended Actions

Choose embedded Linux when application complexity (UI, networking, multimedia, ML inference) justifies the resource footprint. Standardize on a build system per program (Yocto for vendor SoCs, Buildroot for simpler products). Plan kernel and userspace LTS strategy from day one.

Additional Notes

Pairs with #36 Yocto Project. Replaces the prior Intel Atom x6000E vendor-specific callout with the architecture/OS class those parts represent.
