Embedded Systems Industry Roundup: The Latest Hardware, Software & Innovation

The past month has been unusually active across the embedded systems landscape. Between new microcontroller families, AI-infused development tools, advancements in space-grade silicon, medical robotics, and defense-focused radar systems, it’s clear that the pace of innovation is accelerating across every sector.

Below is a list of highlights that I’ve found interesting this month.

Note: Happy Thanksgiving – That’s why this is released early instead of the normal Thursday!

Embedded Hardware Highlights

STMicroelectronics Announces STM32V8 — Their Fastest MCU Ever

STMicroelectronics unveiled the STM32V8, the first MCU built on 18 nm FD-SOI with an Arm Cortex-M85 running at 800 MHz. This is a major leap over previous STM32 lines.
It also features 4 MB of phase-change memory (PCM) for ultra-fast, low-power execution.

Nuvoton Releases Cortex-M55 + Ethos-U55 Edge AI MCU

Nuvotons microcontroller, the M55M1, blends a Cortex-M55 CPU with an integrated Ethos-U55 NPU, enabling real-time on-device ML inference in small IoT devices.

Infineon Launches 60 GHz XENSIV Radar Sensor

Infineon’s BGT60CUTR13AIP integrates antennas directly into the package and offers full FMCW capability for smart home, industrial safety, and low-power presence detection.

Nordic + Würth Release nRF54-Based Wireless Module

The nRF54L15 is a compact 8×12 mm dual-mode wireless module allowing pre-certified stacks or full custom firmware development.

Space Systems & Aerospace

DARPA Awards $44M to Redwire for Air-Breathing VLEO Satellite Drone

Redwire’s “Otter VLEO” program enters Phase 2, creating a new class of air-breathing, ultra-low-orbit satellites with extended lifetime and autonomous capabilities.

Vorago VA4 – New Radiation-Tolerant Cortex-M4 MCUs for LEO

The VA4 family provides built-in rad-tolerance without triple-modular redundancy, cutting satellite electronics costs by up to 75%.

NXP + Jedsy Demo UWB-Guided Medical Delivery Drone

The Jedsy X drone uses NXP’s SR150 Trimension UWB chipset for cm-scale navigation accuracy, allowing drones to dock directly to a patient’s window, even in dense urban environments.

Wrapping Up: What This Month Tells Us

From MCUs and RF SoCs to medical drones and rad-hard ASICs, the embedded industry remains one of the most dynamic corners of modern engineering. Three trends stand out:

  1. AI everywhere — from IDEs to radar to edge inference.
  2. Hardware specialization — rad-hard chips, AI MCUs, and high-frequency RF SoCs.
  3. The rise of “software-defined everything” — satellites, medical devices, and vehicles are all trending toward reconfigurable, update-driven architectures.
